The Movie: Conan the DestroyerThe Second movie, Conan the Destroyer, really crushed my hopes for a second, Howard-like Conan. Instead, Conan is portrayed as an idiot with a sword who can't even count to 5 (No joke, in the movie Conan can't count to five). There is one very Dark fight scene at the end when Conan battles the demon-mutation of Dagoth. That's about it for the positives. The story seems to be adapted from the story written by Jordan. Now, the movie does take some 'artistic license' portraying such characters (i.e. Thoth Amon) but one must expect any movie, adapted from another media, to make certain deviations form the original character. (I admit I cringe every time I see the green beast in a red cloak twirl Conan by his feet) This movie was quite a letdown. It was apparantly geared towards a different audience who seem to prefer senseless violence instead of the exploration of the character of a barbaric king. This movie is worth a rental if you enjoy some senseless sword fights and B-Movie Monsters. Pictured below is a rough drawing of what the final scene between Bombatta and Conan was supposed to look like. Although the design's of the movie showed much promise. The final result of any project is seldom like the original designs. |
