The Movie: Conan the BarbarianConan hit the big screen with "Conan the Barbarian". The origin of Conan changed slightly. In Film, Conan was captured by a Vanir raid on his village while he was still a child. He was taken south and made to turn a huge Grist mill. When he was sold into pit fighting 15 years later. He had become a mountain of muscle. He learned swordplay and the thrill of the kill. He was released from fighting and he began his quest to find Tulsa Doom. This movie did an excellent job of capturing the feel of Howard's work. In fact, many of the situations that Conan found himself within Howard's work were incorporated into the film. (Being crucified on the tree of woe and still killing the vulture who attempts to pick from his open wounds.) The scenery is outstanding, the music shares the power and sorrow of Conan's life and still manages to allude to the majesty that Conan would attain after he acquires the crown of Aquilonia. Hats off to Basil Poledouris for the musical score. Then, of course, there is Arnold Schwartzenegger (or Ahhhnold as he pronounces it). This former Mr. Olympia and Mr. Universe was the perfect man to portray the brauny barbarian. His physique was perfect. His growl was barbaric. His accent only added to the character. What can I say, Arnold is THE MAN!!!! |
